Conquerors of the Sun is a film by Anna Baumgart made in collaboration with art historian, Andrzej Turowski, in conjunction with his book The Locomotive of History. It tells the story of an agitprop train carrying works of art, including numerous pieces by Kazimir Malevich, from Moscow to Berlin at the beginning of the 20th Century. The train however, ends up on a sidetrack in a small town called Koluszki near Lódz in Poland. The project reflects on the genealogy of modernist avant-garde while questioning the truth and reliability of art-historical sources; it blurs the distinction between historical essay and fictional thriller. The film will be included in Manifesta 10 in St Petersburg, opening next week. Conquerors of the Sun is being shown in conjunction with Kate MacGarry's current show, Report from the Exhibition, which includes works by artists Eustachy Kossakowski (1925 - 2001) and Goshka Macuga that respond to the work of Kazimir Malevich.
