Abstract

A film by Sarah Morris (c) 2000 Sarah Morris’s Capital, shot in Washington during the final days of the Clinton administration, draws a complex and layered city portrait. It is a record of what became unimaginable access to the centers of bureaucracies. Morris’s Capital observes codes and structures of power, including the World Bank, the Watergate Complex, the Kennedy Center, the Pentagon and a White House meeting in the Cabinet room. The juxtapositions create an overall consideration of the various moments and interpretations within the city, forming a sequence of reflection points. Capital introduces a revised mapping of power, desire, urbanism and design.
